Theoretical results for chemotactic response and drift of E. coli in a weak attractant gradient.
The bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) moves in its natural environment in a series of straight runs, interrupted by tumbles which cause change of direction. It performs chemotaxis towards chemo-attractants by extending the duration of runs in the direction of the source. When there is a spatial gradient in the attractant concentration, this bias produces a drift velocity directed towards its...
متن کاملResponses of Escherichia coli bacteria to two opposing chemoattractant gradients depend on the chemoreceptor ratio.
Escherichia coli chemotaxis has long served as a simple model of environmental signal processing, and bacterial responses to single chemical gradients are relatively well understood. Less is known about the chemotactic behavior of E. coli in multiple chemical gradients. In their native environment, cells are often exposed to multiple chemical stimuli. Using a recently developed microfluidic che...
متن کاملThe Role of Adaptation in Bacterial Speed Races
Evolution of biological sensory systems is driven by the need for efficient responses to environmental stimuli. A paradigm among prokaryotes is the chemotaxis system, which allows bacteria to navigate gradients of chemoattractants by biasing their run-and-tumble motion. A notable feature of chemotaxis is adaptation: after the application of a step stimulus, the bacterial running time relaxes to...
متن کاملChemotaxis of Escherichia coli to controlled gradients of attractants : Experiments and Mathematical modeling
Chemotaxis is a phenomenon in which a microorganism or multi-cellular organisms are able to direct their movements in the presence of certain chemicals in their environment. This could be either towards favorable chemicals called chemoattractants or away from unfavorable chemicals called chemorepellents. The understanding of this phenomena is important in many biological processes including imm...
متن کاملA diffusion gradient chamber for studying microbial behavior and separating microorganisms.
The natural habitats of most microbes are dynamic and include spatial gradients of growth substrates, electron acceptors, pH, salts, and inhibitory compounds. To mimic this diffusive aspect of nature, we developed an analytical diffusion gradient chamber (DGC) that can be used to separate, enrich for, isolate, and study the behavior of microorganisms. The chamber is a polycarbonate box containi...
